Playing with Balls (?!)
Shame, shame if your mind took the dirty route! I am referring to a game that Tim brought home from France called Pétanque. We have been riding our bikes to a local park to play this game for the past few weekends. Basically, each player has three metal balls, called boules. One player tosses a tiny wooden ball (called a jack) into the game space (a field, a yard, a patch of dirt, etc.) and then proceeds to toss one of their boules toward the wooden one, with the intention of getting as close as possible. The other player then tosses one of their boules. The player whose boule is farther away then takes their turn again. This continues until the player whose boule is farther from the jack lands one closer, or they run out of boules. Then you score points. It’s pretty straight forward and a ton of fun. Here are some photos:
Tim making a desperate attempt to get his boule closer than mine.
After a round of playing. The two boules closest are mine!
My last chance to beat Tim in this particular round… I lost.
We’re still learning all the specifics, but really, it’s more fun to play how we want.
I know this post had nothing to do with food, but stay alert because on Friday, Tim and I are attending the 2nd benefit dinner at Sweetpea Bakery. We are excited! Expect some food photos soon!

You don’t play that in the US? You must go and make it a national sport…it’s one of the few games I actually like. The funny thing is, in German we call it boule, after the balls. Now I guess I am taking the dirty road, but it is true.
HOW FUN!!!
Wow, enjoy the benefit dinner at Sweetpea Bakery!!!
I think we do play this game in the US. It’s called bocce ball…but you usually throw the ball and not roll it. It is fun though!!
Glad you had a blast and its great that you play outside…I haven’t been spending nearly enough time outdoors.
That game sounds like a lot of fun! It is really good (and fun!) to play together too. For some reason when we “grow up” we stop playing and that is just not cool.
for some reason, the use of all those different balls in one game reminds me of quidditch. all you need is some brooms!
I LOVE pétanque! We totally love playing, especially in the summer when picknicking and (gasp) a little drinking is involved (because that totally messes up the ole eye-hand coordination thing). What a fun thing for Tim to bring back from France!
ohhhhhhhh! petanque looks like a lot of fun! and a game i might actually be not half bad at! ahahahaha! awesome!
hope you two have fun on friday! i am looking forward to all the glorious photos! wahooooooooo!
Neat! I love learning about stuff people do in other countries. And those are some lovely, shiny balls!
Hehe…I said “balls.”
yes. bocce ball! this brought back great memories of my italian grand-pa teaching me how to roll them just right.
Bianca said “balls”!!!
this is very much like bocce, no? it beats flip-golf though!
Sounds a lot like bocce ball except I’ve never seen metal balls! I’ll be playing this weekend at a vegan potluck picnic.
Bocce ball is fun, so I’m sure this game is similar. Nice way to take advantage of the sunny days we’ve been getting
